Tim, as one who has used Linux for more than 20 years, I can assure you that most of what I do requires the terminal. If you want to develop software, you will need the terminal. If all you want to do is replace some windows apps, then yes you can easily do that without terminal. Also, you mention that linux was designed for the "enterprise client"... what does that mean? It was designed as a general purpose operating system.
