I've used this approach myself. One loses the possibility of going to a "hamburger" menu on mobile although many hamburger-triggered mobile menus are pretty ugly themselves. A multi-line menu, even with two layers of dropdown, it not too bad actually. As you say - a bit ugly - but workable.
